Coddenham Commemorates VE DAY

May 2025 sees the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), the day that the second world war ended in Europe. The 8th May 1945 was a day that some Coddenham residents remember personally. For the rest of us, one for our parents, grand-parents and for the younger members of the community, great-grand-parents to celebrate the end of six long years of war.

Commemorative events will be taking place throughout the country and Coddenham will also be marking this significant occasion.  On Thursday 8th May a beacon will be lit in the churchyard at 9.25pm, followed by a peal of bells. There will also be a History Club display in the Church featuring items relating to VE Day 1945.

On Saturday 10th May The Coddenham Centre will host an evening family Supper starting at 6pm with entertainment by The Three Chordettes, a vocal trio specialising in 1940s music.  Fish and chips will be served with an alternative children’s menu and vegetarian option. Fish and chips weren’t rationed during the war and fishermen continued to put their lives at risk to feed the nation.  The National Federation of Fish Friers is supporting events throughout the country.  There will be activities for children to enjoy and if you would like to dress in 1940s style you are welcome to do so!

The Coddenham Centre Bar will be open and there will be some activities for children.

Tickets are £15 for adults and £8 for children.  Tickets are available from The Community Shop (cash only), at events around the village or online at Ticketsource.co.uk.

We hope that we can bring a feeling of commemoration and celebration that will be enjoyed by all generations.

Debbie McDonnell, current CCRG Chair
