St Mary’s Flower Festival in Celebration of the Life of Dorothy Lay
St Mary’s Flower Festival on 25th and 26th September has a theme of celebrating the life of Dorothy Lay. Dorothy was born in Coddenham at Mill House where her grandparents ran a fish and chip shop. She was always part of village life from childhood when she sang and acted in the productions produced by Helen Wyles. She and her husband David took a leading role in St. Mary’s Church, both being church wardens over the years. She ran St Mary’s Sunday School and Youth Group, helped by her daughter Nyree. Her many talents included quilting, patch work, embroidery, lace making, cooking, gardening and flower arranging, running classes in the old village hall, yet she always had time for others.
The flower festival depicts her talents and her faith, lived by her example and devotion to St Mary’s. The flower displays are created by residents who knew Dorothy and by those who appreciated her gifts from Stowmarket Flower Club. We are extremely grateful for all those who have given their time and talent to create the floral displays and provide refreshments.
Our thanks also go to everyone for all the support and help received over the years in keeping St Mary’s a sacred place for worship and visitors.
