A quarry?  Somewhere where stone is mined?  An animal pursued by a hunter?

Correct, but did you know that a quarry is also a diamond-shaped pane of glass used in lattice windows?

From the 16th Century  diamond pane glazed windows were used in only the highest status buildings and were constructed of small panes of glass – quarrels or quarries.  The word probably comes from the Latin ‘quadrellum’, meaning little square or from the French ‘carre’ meaning square.

The West Window at St Mary’s has around 500 quarries held in place by lead.  Recent inspections have shown that many of the quarries need repair or replacing and that the tracery that holds them in place is also in need of repair.  As part of St Mary’s fundraising appeal there is an opportunity to sponsor a quarry for a minimum donation of £5.
